Fort Myers, FL - Knox dropped its second straight game in the Gene Cusic Classic, 13-1 to the University of Wisconsin-Stout on Friday.
The Prairie Fire (3-3) couldn’t generate much offense against the Blue Devils (6-7) and starting pitcher Andrew Driessen. Driessen shut Knox down over six innings, allowing three hits and one run with four strikeouts.
Sophomore Andrew Sparrow (Sullivan, IL, Sullivan) got the starting nod on the hill for the Prairie Fire and was charged with the loss. Sparrow (0-1) gave up seven runs, five earned, on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts in five innings.
Senior Nikko Juarez (Momence, IL, Bishop McNamara) came on in relief of Sparrow in the sixth inning and pitched the rest of the way. Stout touched up Juarez for six earned runs on eight hits in three innings while the Knox reliever struck out two and walked one.
The Prairie Fire had five hits in the game. Seniors Caleb Weaver (Galesburg, IL, Galesburg) and Ryan Hoffman (Sugar Grove, IL, Marmion Academy) had two hits apiece. One of Hoffman’s hits scored Weaver for the lone Knox run. Junior Jackson White (Grayslake, IL, Grayslake Central) had the other hit for the Prairie Fire.
Knox tries to snap a two-game slide on Saturday against Otterbein University at 1:00 p.m. EST.
