GRINNELL, Iowa – The Prairie Fire are off to a good start in Midwest Conference play with a 3-0 win at Grinnell College on Saturday.
Knox has won five straight matches, four of them by shutout, while halting the Pioneers' winning streak at three. Grinnell had not lost since its season opener on August 31.
The Prairie Fire (6-2, 1-0 MWC) staked to a 1-0 lead just 5:11 into the match on a goal by junior
Charles Edemba (Abia, Nigeria, Santana Rhetoric Institute), his third in the last two matches, assisted by sophomore
Terence Lau (Shanghai, China, Shanghai American School).
The Pioneers (3-2-2, 0-1 MWC) managed to take only two shots in the first half against the stingy Knox defense, which has not allowed a goal by an opponent since September 5 at St. Olaf College.
The Prairie Fire struck again when a shot by junior
Nathaniel Logie (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Queens Royal College) got past Grinnell keeper Major May at the 65:01 mark. The goal was Logie's fifth of the season while junior
Abdulsalam Oganla (Lagos, Nigeria, The International Academy) doled out his fifth assist.
The Knox defense and senior goalie
Sean Dockrell (Dublin, Ireland, San Bernadino CC) withstood Grinnell's second half attack to preserve the victory. The Pioneers outshot the Prairie Fire 6-2 after the break, but only two of the shots were on target and Dockrell snagged both of them.
Oganla scored for the last goal when he drove home a penalty kick – his second goal of the year – at the 66:43 mark.
Both Knox and Grinnell finished with eight shots, while the Prairie Fire held a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Dockrell had three saves and picked up his fourth shutout of the season.
The Prairie Fire return to Jorge Prats Field for a Midwest Conference match against rival Monmouth College on Saturday, September 27 at 11:00 a.m.
