GALESBURG, Illinois – The Prairie Fire couldn't overcome late runs by Benedictine University-Springfield and dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at home.

Benedictine held Knox scoreless through six innings to take the opener, 6-2.  The Bulldogs followed with an eight-run seventh inning to defeat the Prairie Fire 14-4 in the finale.

Sophomore Kaly Davidson (Needham, MA, Needham) drove in both Knox runs in the first game with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh.

Benedictine (13-28) built a 3-0 lead through the first two innings.  First-year pitcher Alannah Sanchez (Espanola, NM, McCurdy) settled in and didn't allow another run until the top of the sixth.  The Bulldogs added two more in the seventh for a 6-0 cushion.

The Prairie Fire (1-22) had three of their five hits in the last at-bat.

Senior Rhiannon Neuville (Eugene, OR, South Eugene) finished with a team-high two hits and sophomore Chelsey Howard (Galesburg, IL, Galesburg) doubled for the only extra-base hit.

Sanchez went the distance in the circle for Knox.  She surrendered four earned runs and seven hits, walked six, and struck out four.

In the second game, first-year Kristen Koviekis (Tinley Park, IL, Lincoln-Way North) stole home after a single by senior Brittney Price (Wyoming, IL, Stark County) in the bottom of the second inning to cut a 2-0 deficit in half.

The Bulldogs stretched the lead to 5-1 in the top of the fourth.  The Prairie Fire answered with an RBI single by Price and a run by Koviekis on a passed ball to close the gap to 5-3.

After Benedictine scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth, Knox came back with one of its own when Davidson singled home senior Kayla Behrens (Moline, IL, Moline) to make it 6-4.

A scoreless sixth inning for both squads made way for the eight-run, nine-hit outburst by the Bulldogs that put the game out of reach.

The Prairie Fire banged out 10 hits in the second game and were led by Behrens, Koviekis, and Price with two apiece.

Koviekis took the loss after pitching 6.2 innings.

Knox resumes Midwest Conference South Division play with a doubleheader at home against Grinnell College (2-21, 2-5 MWC) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
