GALESBURG, Illinois – Cornell College slugged eight home runs and swept both games of a Midwest Conference South Division doubleheader against the Prairie Fire on Sunday.

The Rams homered three times and won the opener 14-0, followed by an 18-5 victory against Knox that featured five home runs, including three in a nine-run inning.

The Prairie Fire (2-25, 2-11) did not record a hit in the first game against Cornell ace Jesse Applehans, who struck out five, walked one, and hit a batter in her five innings of work.

Cornell (27-5, 11-2) scored two runs in the top of the first followed by three in the second, three in the third, and six in the fourth.

Knox came alive on offense in the second game with five runs in the bottom of the third after the Rams built a 7-0 lead.  First-year Kristen Koviekis (Tinley Park, IL, Lincoln-Way North) drove in the first run with a double.  Seniors Kayla Behrens (Moline, IL, Moline) and Rhiannon Neuville (Eugene, OR, South Eugene) added RBI singles to make it 7-3.  A ground ball off the bat of sophomore Chelsey Howard (Galesburg, IL, Galesburg) and an error on the Rams accounted for the two other runs by the Prairie Fire.

The Rams stretched the lead to 9-5 on a two-run homer in the fourth, and then exploded for nine runs in the fifth.  Eight of the nine runs scored on three home runs, including a three-run shot and a grand slam.

Cornell finished with 15 hits.

Behrens went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored at the plate for Knox.  She also started the game in the circle and took the loss.

The Prairie Fire resume play on Wednesday at MacMurray College.  The first of two games against the Highlanders starts at 3:00 p.m.
