Box Score 2 ROCK ISLAND, Illinois – Offense was hard to come by for the Prairie Fire in a doubleheader loss on Tuesday at nationally ranked Augustana College.
The 20th ranked Vikings pulled away for a 10-1 win in the opener and completed the sweep with a 12-1 victory in the finale.
Knox (0-16) took a 1-0 lead early in the first contest. Sophomore Chelsey Howard, who was hit by a pitch leading off the top of the second inning, came around to score on an RBI groundout by senior Brittney Price.
The visitors had two runners aboard with one out in the top of the third, but Augustana left them stranded by inducing a fly ball to center and a fielder's choice at second base.
The Vikings (18-7-1) answered with two RBI singles with two outs in the bottom half of the inning to move ahead, 2-1.  They added two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, followed by a four-run sixth frame to end the game.
First-year Alannah Sanchez worked five innings in the circle and took the loss.
Augustana took control early in the nightcap by scoring six runs on five hits and two errors in the first inning. Five more runners crossed the plate in the bottom of the second for an 11-0 cushion.
The Prairie Fire prevented a shutout in the top of the fourth on another RBI groundout by Price that scored Howard. The Vikings tacked on one more run in their half of the inning, and then retired the side in order in the top of the fifth.
The loss was charged to Knox starting pitcher, first-year Kristen Koviekis.
Senior Rhiannon Neuville had two of the Prairie Fire's four hits in the second game.
The squad is idle until Friday, which marks the first day of the Midwest Conference Classic in Janesville, Wisconsin. Knox will play five games against MWC North Division teams through Sunday, beginning with Ripon College at 1:00 p.m. and Lawrence University at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
