Football Falls at Beloit

BELOIT, Wisconsin—The Prairie Fire football team lost to Beloit 42-32 on road on Saturday.

Knox (0-2) and the Buccaneers played to a 6-6 tie through the first quarter. Beloit struck first, but running back Nick Edlund (St. Charles, IL, Aurora Christian) punched one in from a yard out to force the tie. The Buccaneers scored 10 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 16-6 lead into halftime. The Prairie Fire outscored Beloit in the third quarter thanks to a Wes Koerber (Norco, CA, Norco Senior) field goal and a 22-yard rush by quarterback Matt McCaffrey (Wilmette, IL, New Trier). Knox still trailed 25-17 heading into the fourth quarter. After limiting the Bucs to a field goal, the Prairie Fire completed a touchdown to receiver Dalton James (Homer, IL, Heritage) to pull within three points. Beloit scored two straight touchdowns to quickly regain the lead for good. Braeden Westfall (Rock Falls, IL, Rock Falls) scored the final touchdown for the Prairie Fire with less than a minute to play.

McCaffrey completed 30-of-46 attempts for 373 yards and a touchdown. James ended up hauling in 15 receptions for 198 yards, both career highs for the sophomore receiver. Malik Hamilton (Chicago, IL, Lane Tech) grabbed eight receptions for 75 yards and Martwain Holmes (Lansing, IL, Urban Prep Academy) added five catches for 97 yards.

Donnye Sommerville (Clayton, MO, Clayton) led the Prairie Fire defense with eight tackles. Quinn Sharp (Beaumont, CA, Beaumont) picked up a sack for a seven yard loss.
