RIPON, Wisconsin—The Knox College Football team (0-4, 0-2 MWC) faced a tough loss riddled with turnovers in their matchup against Ripon College (1-3, 1-1 MWC).
Â
Knox opened up the scoring for the day when
Matt McCaffrey (Wilmette, IL, New Trier) led the Fire on a nine play 75-yard drive capped by a one yard rushing touchdown by the QB. The Red Hawks wasted no time scoring themselves as they scored on a rushing touchdown on the next drive.
Â
Knox would not give in easily though, as McCaffrey scored his second rushing touchdown of the day on the very next drive. That made the score 13-7 Knox before Ripon went up 14-13 heading into the half.
Â
After halftime Ripon broke off two more scoring drives to make the score 27-13. Quickly after, McCaffrey found
Malik Hamilton (Chicago, IL, Lane Tech) for a 57 yard touchdown pass to bring the score within eight. The comeback attempt fell short as Knox fell to Ripon 33-19.
Â
McCaffrey had a great game both in the air and on the ground for the Fire. He completed 22-of-42 passing attempts for 314 yards while rushing for two touchdowns. Hamilton had six receptions for 106 yards and
Patrick Marzolino (Orange, CA, El Modena) had five catches for 85 yards.
Â
Brock Gabel (Bourbonnais, IL, Bishop McNamara) and
Quinn Sharp (Beaumont, CA, Beaumont) held down the Fire defensive unit. Gabel had 10 total tackles and Sharp recorded nine including a sack.
The Fire will look for their first win of the season when they take on Grinnell on October 8.
