Baseball Earns Sweep of Scots on Senior Day

GALESBURG, Illinois—The Prairie Fire baseball team swept a conference doubleheader with Monmouth College on Saturday to give the seniors a proper Senior Day sendoff.

Knox (15-16, 8-10 MWC) scored first in the first game, but the Scots tied the game in the fifth inning. The Fire plated a run in the ninth for a walk-off 4-3 victory.  In game two, Knox scored early and added on in the middle innings to cruise to an 8-3 win.

Dalton James (Homer, IL, Heritage), Ryan Weitendorf (New Lenox, IL, Lincoln-Way East), and Matt McCaffrey (Wilmette, IL, New Trier) led the Prairie Fire with four hits apiece. Andrew Recker (Huntingburg, IN, Southridge), Drake Sykes (Galesburg, IL, Galesburg), and Alex Bell (Elgin, IL, Burlington Central) each added three hits. Kobe Shutter (Kankakee, IL, Bishop McNamara) and Brendan Powers (Bourbonnais, IL, Bradley-Bourbonnais) also had two hits. Weitendorf bashed a home-run and tallied a team-high three RBI on the day.

Trevan Lowtharp (Rockford, IL, Winnebago) and Stryker Davies (Glenrock, WY, Glenrock) each started and kept the Scots bats at bay, but neither was able to earn the win. Larry Murray (Dardenne Prairie, MO, Fort Zumwalt West) came on in relief in both games to earn both wins. Lowtharp gave up one earned over 8 and 1/3 innings in game one. Davies gave up no earned runs in four innings in game two. Murray pitched out of a bases loaded jam in game one and added two scoreless innings in game two.

Knox will travel to Monmouth on May 6 to finish the four game series with Scots.
