For Kayla Brown, playing sports was natural. With three older brothers who were athletes and parents who also played sports, ball fields and courts were familiar territory. The Sacramento native grew up playing soccer and basketball, with soccer being her favorite.
During her senior year of high school, she became a bit burned out on the field. Knox came calling for her basketball skills. Although she had intended to stay in California for college, the chance to flex her independence at a small, tight-knit school was appealing. She was also impressed with Knox's academics.
Upon arriving she found out Knox's soccer team could use a bit of help. She added that to her plate, and has thoroughly enjoyed being a two-sport athlete, especially after the season both teams had this year.
The junior forward already started a personal highlight reel. During the Midwest Conference Soccer Championship she suffered a fractured ankle 10 minutes into the game. Unaware that it was broken, she came back out the second half and scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal. Kayla made the trip to St. Louis for Knox's first appearance in the NCCA's but couldn't play. She's hoping to experience the NCAA tournament again, and is optimistic given the team is not losing any seniors.
On the basketball court, the Prairie Fire women also chalked up an impressive number of wins, and looks promising for next year.
"Both programs have the potential to do great things," she says. The junior is hesitant to pick a preference between the two sports. "It's hard when people ask me what my favorite is," she says, adding she enjoys both but is probably a better soccer player.
In addition to her playing time, she supports the Prairie Fire men's baseball team as a manager, which she's done since her first year. She plans on becoming a nurse, the perfect mix for her love of science and love of helping people.
