GRINNELL, Iowa -Â The Prairie Fire football team got their first win of the season on Saturday with a 28-7 victory over Grinnell College.
Knox (1-5, 1-1 MWC) opened the scoring in the first quarter with some great special teams play as Chris Scott broke through the Grinnell punt team to block the punt and return it for a 21-yard touchdown to get the Prairie Fire on the board. The Prairie Fire offense would take the ensuing possession and methodically march the ball down the field on a 12 play, 55-yard drive that ended in a touchdown strike from Jacob Amaro to Grant Graham. The next drive Grinnell would march down the field threatening at the Knox 10-yard line, but a pass break up by Larry Harris on fourth
-and-eight would and the drive. After two straight fourth down stops by the Prairie Fire on Grinnell's next two possessions, the offense would take over for a two-minute drive. Jacob Amaro would run the two-minute offense masterfully starting the drive 5-for-5 with completions to Hunter Lee and Grant Graham. Amaro would complete the drive with a TD completion to Kobe Shutter as time expired giving the Prairie Fire a 21-0 lead going into half.
On Grinnell's first drive of the second half they would score on a 16-play, 72-yard drive to make the game 21-7 Knox. This would be all the offense that Grinnell would get in the second half as the Prairie Fire closed the door the rest of the game. The Fire defense held the pioneers to just 185 yards of offense with only 15 yards rushing on the day. Jeremiah Mathews would lead the way for the Prairie Fire defense with 11 Tackles, including 1.5 Tackles for Loss.
The Prairie Fire Offense would put the game away early in the fourth quarter with a 15-play, 76-yard scoring drive. On the drive, the Fire O-line would dominate the line of scrimmage as the Prairie Fire would run the ball 10 straight plays and cap the drive with a 1-yard touchdown by Braedan Westfall. Ty Straw would lead the rushing attack with 106 yards on 14 carries, averaging 7.5 yards per carry. Amaro led the passing attack with 175 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
"This is a great team win for our guys with our offense, defense and special teams all contributing to the win," said head coach Damon Tomeo "Chris Scott's blocked punt in the first quarter for the touchdown was a huge play that got the momentum in our favor in the game."
Knox will return home to play Illinois College on October 20. It will be homecoming week on the Knox College campus.
