APPLETON, Wisconsin—On a brisk day in Appleton, Wisconsin, the Knox College Prairie Fire men's soccer team thoroughly defeated the Lawrence Vikings by a score of 6-0. The match was marked by Knox's domination in every facet of the game, as evidenced by Knox putting up 43 shots compared to Lawrence's zero.
The first half saw the Prairie Fire get an early lead, with Nick Janulis combining with James Barrington for a give-and-go for the first goal of the game in the sixth minute. Knox scored two more times in the first half, as Alessandro Belanelli struck a ball off a corner kick and Martin Garcia also scored to drive the Knox lead up to three the first 45 minutes wound down.
Knox also started the second half strong as well, as both Rocky Plaza and and Jun Min both scored close on goal off of rebounds to put the Prairie Fire up 5-0. Knox's offense maintained their fast-paced tempo, and as a result Lawrence was unable to get any kind of offensive action going. Even though Knox took their foot off the gas after their fifth goal, Tim Driscoll was still able to put another one in the net in the 84th minute to cement the final score of 6-0.
"It was a great performance in difficult conditions," said head coach Brian O'Connor. "Everyone contributed and it showed with six different goal scorers. Most importantly it clinched a spot in the Midwest Conference Tournament."
The men's soccer team will be making their sixth consecutive appearance in the MWC Tournament, with the host yet to be determined. St. Norbert is in the driver's seat with two games to go and a one-game lead on the Prairie Fire. Knox lost to the Green Knights on September 30 by a score of 3-1.
Knox next plays on October 22 against the Elmhurst College Bluejays at home.
