Football Falls to Monmouth on Senior Day

GALESBURG, Illinois—The Prairie Fire football team fell to Monmouth 40-7 in the 130th annual Bronze Turkey Bowl on Saturday afternoon.

Knox (2-7, 2-3 MWC) held the Fighting Scots to a field goal in their first possession, but Monmouth found the end zone on their next possession and took a 10-0 lead after one quarter of play.

The Scots scored another touchdown on their second drive of the second quarter, but missed the extra point. The Prairie Fire held Monmouth to a field goal on the next possession and went into halftime down 19-0.

The Scots turned it on in the third quarter when they scored quickly on their first two possessions and added another touchdown to take a 40-0 lead into the final quarter.

Knox scored midway through the fourth quarter after Braeden Westfall moved the chains with three first downs. Jacob Amaro then found Hunter Lee and Tristyn Ruiz for back-to-back first down catches. Amaro followed with a touchdown pass to Hunter Lee for 15 yards and Jesus Flores hit the extra point.

Lee caught six passes for 83 yards and Kobe Shutter snagged four receptions as well. Westfall finished with 61 total yards rushing. Logan Hollis racked up 15 tackles and Evan Economos added nine. Hollis also picked up a sack.

"We knew coming in that Monmouth has a good team and we would need to play a terrific game to give ourselves a chance," said head coach Damon Tomeo. "We had some opportunities that we couldn't convert on in the first half and a couple short fields gave them some easier scores."

Knox honored 15 seniors before the game for Senior Day. Jordan Anderson, Evan Economos, Jesus Flores, Malik Hamilton, Logan Hollis, Patrick Marzolino, Tyler Paul, Dom Parello, Tyler Podwojski, Tristyn Ruiz, Quinn Sharp, Trey Swanson, Mario Whitely, Dylan Zippay, and manager Lauren Kaltenecker.

"In their final home game, it has been such a personal honor for me to be a part of our seniors' college careers," added Tomeo. "These 14 men have contributed so much to Knox College and our football program, they will be missed."

Knox will play at Ripon on November 10 at 1:00 p.m. in the fifth place game during the Midwest Conference Championship Weekend. Knox earned the third seed in the South Division by winning the tiebreaker over Cornell and beating Illinois College head-to-head.
