DE PERE, Wisconsin—The Prairie Fire women's basketball team defeated St. Norbert 72-70 on Saturday afternoon.
Knox (4-3) fell behind the Green Knights by 10 points with 3:51 left in the opening period. The Prairie Fire stormed back to within two points with 46 seconds left in the quarter, but St. Norbert hit a trey to close out the period with a 15-10 lead. Knox tied the game at 21-21 with 6:01 left in the first half and took a four-point lead at the 1:23 mark. The Green Knights closed out the first half with seven straight points to retake the lead 32-29 heading into halftime.
The Prairie Fire quickly built up a lead in the second half, but St. Norbert battled back to take a 52-51 lead with 1:38 left in the third period. The teams traded blows to end the quarter tied 54-54. The fourth quarter was more of the same with Knox and the Green Knights exchanging leads throughout. Jarrelyn McCall converted on a layup with 23 seconds remaining in the game to give the Prairie Fire a 71-70 lead. After a St. Norbert turnover, McCall hit a free throw to put the score at 72-70. A missed three-pointer by the Green Knights sealed the Knox victory.
Karlie Thorn hit 8-of-10 from long-range to score a game-high 27 points. The eight three-pointers are a new Knox single-game record. Jarrelyn McCall added 19 points of her own.
"I am really proud of how our team bounced back quickly and got a tough road win. That is only the second time we have ever beaten St. Norbert and first ever victory at their place," said head coach Emily Cline. "We showed a lot of grit today and it was a great win for us. Karlie Thorn was the spark that got us going. She is a great shooter and I am so proud of her for setting the 3-point record."
Knox returns to action on December 5 a they return home to host Lawrence.
