Baseball Drops Series to Monmouth

GALESBURG, Illinois—The Prairie Fire baseball team faced a crazy schedule on Saturday and came away with two losses before winning the final game of the series.

Knox (5-10) had to suspend the second game on Thursday at home because of darkness so the ninth inning was played on Saturday. The Prairie Fire went into the top of the ninth behind by one, but four runs by the Scots in the inning helped Monmouth come away with the victory.

In the regularly scheduled doubleheader at Monmouth, the Scots jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first inning and added three more in the fifth. Knox got one back in the top of the seventh, but the Scots added one right back in the bottom halt to take a 7-2 lead. Monmouth added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 10-2 lead into the ninth. The Prairie Fire threatened in the ninth by loading the bases with nobody out. A groundout by Juston Woodard scored a run and Andrew Recker reached on an error to score another. The rally was cut short by a strikeout and a game-ending groundout.

In the final game of the series, the rivals played a back-and-forth affair with Monmouth taking a 1-0 lead in the first and Knox tying it up in the third. The Prairie Fire took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth, but the Scots responded with two runs of their own in the bottom halt to take a 3-2 lead. Knox came back with two more runs in the top of the sixth, but Monmouth again responded with two more runs to take a 5-4 lead. The Prairie Fire tied it up in the top of the eighth and scored two more runs in the top of the ninth to take a 7-5 lead with darkness once again fast approaching. Andrew Ponce shut the door on the Scots and picked up his first victory of the season.

Paul Sanders finished the final three games of the series 8-for-14 with five runs scored and three RBI. He also stole five bases. Dalton James went 4-for-10 with two runs scored and four RBI. Kobe Shutter was 4-for-12 with two RBI and a run. Tristan Hannah finished with three hits in seven at bats.

Ponce three 3.2 scoreless innings in relief to pick up the victory in the last game of the series.

Knox will host Iowa Wesleyan on April 2.
