GALESBURG, Illinois—On a brisk day at the Knosher Bowl, the Knox Prairie Fire (0-4) faced a tough test against the St. Norbert Green Knights, as they were defeated by a final score of 34-0.
Â
The opening minutes of the game appeared promising for the Prairie Fire, as they forced the Green Knights into a three-and-out on their opening drive and nearly intercepted multiple passes.Â
Â
After their first drive, St. Norbert appeared to find their rhythm on offense, using their tough running game to slowly gash the Knox defense. A 60-yard passing touchdown on their second drive followed by great field position and solid running put the Green Knights up 14-0 in the first quarter.
Â
In the second quarter, Knox appeared to be putting together a successful drive. Totalling a whopping 14 plays, the Prairie Fire slowly marched down to the St. Norbert 19-yard line. Unfortunately, the drive stalled and Jesus Flores missed a 36-yard field goal.
Knox held the Green Knights to a pair of field goals in the second quarter and trailed 20-0 heading into the half.
Â
St. Norbert tacked on another touchdown in the third quarter and forced the Prairie Fire to a few three-and-outs to take a 27-0 lead in the final quarter.
Knox threatened early in the fourth quarter with a nine-play, 45-yard drive, but came up just short.Â
The Green Knights added a final touchdown late in the game to earn the 34-0 victory.
Â
"Our guys came to play today," said head coach Damon Tomeo. "It was good to see the intensity and handling the adversity of the game well. We knew coming in that the margin for error in a game like this would be slim, we had some chances but just couldn't capitalize in those situations.
Quarterback Grant Graham finished with 122 yards passing, completing 13-of-25 passing attempts. He hit Malik Hamilton three times for 50 yards and hit Hunter Lee on a 38-yard completion. Hunter Baquet picked up eight total tackles to lead the Prairie Fire and Jordan Anderson racked up a pair of sacks. Punter Garrett Rau had a busy day, punting nine times and averaging 35.3 yards per punt.
Â
Knox looks to win their first game of the season next week as they play host to Lake Forest College.
