Women's Soccer Falls to Wisconsin-Whitewater

GALESBURG, IL – The Knox women's soccer team lost 2-1 to Wisconsin-Whitewater on a hot and humid Tuesday afternoon.

Early on in the matchup, sophomore forward Lydia Mitchell found an opening and put up a shot on goal, but the goalkeeper for the Warhawks pulled in an impressive save.

In the 21st minute, Carli Nehls put Wisconsin-Whitewater ahead with a goal placed in the upper-left corner of the net. The Prairie Fire held off for the remainder of the half and replaced goal keeper Katy Coseglia with first-year Sarah Ruttencutter.

The Warhawks attacked the right side of the field throughout the match and tallied another goal courtesy of Elli Wahlberg in the 57th minute.

Knox made a push in the middle of the second half and Alyx Farris scored a penalty kick goal in the 75th minute. Despite another late push to tie the game, the Warhawks held the Prairie Fire away from any comeback opportunities.

Ruttencutter finished the match with six saves.

"After a long weekend we had to make a quick turnaround and battle through a tough opponent," said assistant soccer coach Annie Gerdes. "We learned a lot from this game and played very well against a good team. We're looking forward to taking these lessons into our match this weekend."

Next up for Knox is a conference match against Illinois College on Saturday.
