GALESBURG, Illinois—The Prairie Fire women's soccer team fell to the Monmouth College Fighting Scots via penalty kicks Saturday at Jorge Prats Field.
Â
In the first half, it was apparent that both teams had come to play their most physical style of soccer. 12 fouls were called on Monmouth in the first half alone, with the Prairie Fire tallying nine of their own. Knox attempted several through balls during the half in an attempt to get some offensive spark, but were thwarted most times by a tough Scot defense. Knox's defense held tough in their own right as well, not allowing any shots on target. As most of the play was centered in the middle third of the field, neither offense could break through, and the score remained 0-0 at the break.
Â
The fouls continued to be called as each team struggled to maintain control of the ball, with Knox receiving a yellow card as well. Katy Coseglia made several highlight saves as well, keeping the Prairie Fire in the game. Knox's offense still struggled to make an impact, despite strong runs from Lydia Mitchell and Olivia Grierson. Knox got off six shots to Monmouth's four, but neither team could convert any, and regular time ended with no goals being scored.
Â
Overtime proved to contain more of the same for each team. Knox managed to get four shots, but none were on target, and the frustration in their lack of offensive success was evident. They had multiple corner kicks that nearly brought them successful chances, but none managed to come through. Overtime ended without a score, and the game progressed to penalty kicks. Both teams had shots carrom off the crossbar, but the teams were still tied after the first five penalties. In the first of the sudden death penalties, Knox missed their attempt, and the game ended.
