BELOIT, Wisconsin— With only two games left in the schedule after today, the Knox College Prairie Fire went on the road to face off against Beloit College.
The Prairie Fire's first points were courtesy of senior Morgan Potter. The first quarter was quite the back-and-forth affair. Beloit is lower in the standings than Knox but the raucous home crowd gave them an added advantage.
Leading scorer Jarrelyn McCall opened up the second quarter scoring with a jumper. Knox's defense was vigilant and active in the second quarter. The Prairie Fire were forcing turnovers and scoring off of the turnovers (eight points off turnovers in the first half). The Prairie Fire's offense was potent in the first half. As a team, the Prairie Fire shot 12-of-22 (54.5%) from the field in the 1st half.
At the break, Knox led 28-23. The leading scorer and rebounder was McCall. Turnovers played a crucial role in the reason the score remained close despite the Prairie Fire playing a great first half.
For the third straight quarter, Knox opened up the scoring again when Potter hit a shot. In the opening minutes of the third, the Prairie Fire extended the lead to nine, but a turnover would lead to a six-point swing for Beloit.
A flurry of treys from Beloit would be the nail in the coffin for the Prairie Fire. They would keep battling, but the score would prove to be too much to overcome. The Knox College Prairie Fire would lose 71-60. This loss leaves them tied with St. Norbert College for fourth place in the Midwest Conference standings.
"The difference in the game was defensive lapses and turnovers," said head coach Emily Cline. "Mental mistakes really hurt us today."
