GALESBURG, Illinois—The Prairie Fire baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Monmouth at home on Sunday afternoon.
Most of the scoring in game one was done in the first inning as the Scots plated three runs in the top of the first and Knox responded with two of their own. Monmouth added a run in the top of the third inning to finish the scoring. Knox threatened in the fifth, sixth, and eighth innings, but could not push any further runs across.
Monmouth took an early lead in the second game as well when they scored two runs in the first inning and added six runs in the fourth. Knox plated a run in the bottom half of the fourth, but the Scots responded with a run in the top of the fifth. The Prairie used a five-run sixth inning to climb back in the game, but Monmouth used another big inning in the seventh to earn the 17-7 victory.
Brendan Powers and Chris McTeague each notched two hits on the day for the Prairie Fire. McTeague hit a double and Andrew Recker blasted a three-run homer.
Knox will look to even up the series when they travel to Monmouth on April 1.
