MONMOUTH, Illinois—The Prairie Fire baseball team split a doubleheader with Monmouth on Monday afternoon.
After two scoreless innings, Knox broke through with three runs in the third inning thanks to a two RBI double by Brendan Powers and an RBI single by Kobe Shutter. Starting pitcher EJ Roncone held the Scots scoreless until the eighth inning when Monmouth loaded the bases. Stryker Davies worked out of the inning and pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the victory.
The Prairie Fire struck first again in game two with a run in the top of the fourth inning, but the Scots responded with two of their own. Knox tied the score in the top of the sixth, but Monmouth again countered with a run. The Scots tacked on three more in the seventh and held on for the 6-2 win.
Roncone picked up the win in game one firing 7.1 innings and giving up one earned run. He gave up five hits, three walks, and struck out 11. Davies picked up the save by working out of a jam and finishing the game.
Juston Woodard picked up three hits on the day to lead the Prairie Fire. Dalton James, Andrew Recker, and Kobe Shutter each picked up a pair of hits as well.
Knox returns to action on April 4 when they travel to Augustana.
