Baseball Takes a Pair from IC

GALESBURG, Illinois—The Prairie Fire baseball team swept a doubleheader with conference foe Illinois College on Wednesday afternoon.

Knox scored three runs in the first inning of game one to set the tone early. Juston Woodard led off with a double and advanced to third on an error. Adam Brown drove him in with a ground ball to the second baseman. Brendan Powers singled and Dalton James hit a two-run shot to left field. The Prairie Fire added a run in the second and another in the third. After going scoreless in the fourth, the bats came alive again in the fifth and sixth innings as Knox added another eight runs and finished the game in seven innings with a 13-0 victory. Kobe Shutter hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.

Andrew Ponce allowed four hits and pair of walks in seven shutout innings on the mound for the Prairie Fire. He struck out four to earn his second win of the season.

Knox got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the first in game two as well. Woodard singled and stole second, Brown walked, Powers walked, and Andrew Kirchmeier was hit by a pitch. A pair of wild pitches plated Brown and Powers. The Blueboys scored their first run of the day in the top of the second inning, but the Prairie Fire responded with two runs in the bottom half. Knox added nine more in the third and fourth innings to take a commanding 14-2 lead and again finished the game in seven innings with a 14-3 win.

EJ Roncone earned his fourth win of the season in the second game. He allowed two unearned runs on three hits and two walks. He struck out six in six innings.

Woodard finished the day with six hits in nine at bats with a home-run and seven RBI. Dalton James added four hits, a home-run, and five runs scored. Chris McTeague also added four hits. Brown and Powers each tallied three hits on the day.

"Those were two huge wins today," said associate head coach James Clark. "We still have work to do and will use the next two days of practice to prepare to play IC again on Saturday."

Knox will look to continue their hot-hitting when they travel to Illinois College on April 20.
