Softball Drops a Pair at Home Against Cornell

GALESBURG, Illinois—The Prairie Fire softball team fell to Cornell in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

The Rams plated a run in the top of the first in game one to take an early lead. They added a pair in the third to expand their lead to 3-0, but really came alive in the fifth and sixth. Cornell scored three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to take the 8-0 victory.

Game two was a back-and-forth affair. The Rams again scored a run in the top of the first inning, but Knox responded with three runs in the bottom half. Cornell added two runs in the top of the second and the Prairie Fire scored three more in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-3 lead. The Rams pushed across a pair in the top of the third to bring their deficit to just a run. Knox could not get much going the next few innings and Cornell scored seven unanswered runs to win 12-6.

Katy Coseglia finished the day with three hits to become the new single-season record holder with 47 hits and counting. Mady Ferris added three hits on the day and Niamh Pemberton tallied two hits as well. Kylie Wolf drove in two runs on a double in game two.

"We had them against the wall in game two," said head coach Erin Rutledge. "We just could not quite put them away and they found a way back into the game."

Knox will travel to Lake Forest to play a doubleheader on April 26.
