GALESBURG, Illinois—The Prairie Fire baseball team earned a split with Cornell on Sunday.
The Rams scored two runs on a two-run home run in the top of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. The Prairie Fire threatened with leadoff base runners in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, but could not push a run across. Knox loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Cornell shut the door with a popup and a strikeout.
The Prairie Fire struck first in game two when Brendan Powers doubled Andrew Recker home in the fifth inning. The Rams tied the game in the top of the eighth, but Knox responded with two runs in the bottom half to take the lead. Cornell tied the game in the top of the ninth with a two-out two-run home run, but Juston Woodard responded with a two-out walk off home run in the bottom half to give the Prairie Fire the victory.
Dalton James led Knox with four hits in eight at bats. Kobe Shutter also added a pair of hits.
"We pitched the ball well all day," said associate head coach James Clark. "Cornell took advantage of our few mistakes and we were still able to come away with the split. We need to bring the same intensity tomorrow and see what happens."
The Prairie Fire travel to Cornell on April 29 to finish the series.
