Men's Soccer Ties With Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa—The Prairie Fire men's soccer team fought to a draw with the Wartburg College Knights today with a final score of 2-2. Despite holding a one goal lead early in the first half, Knox was unable to hold the lead throughout the second half and eventual overtime period. The draw is their second in a row and moves their record to 4-2-2 on the season.

The first half began with a stream of goals that proved to be the majority of the scoring for the game. An early Knox foul in their own penalty area set up a penalty kick for Nick Schwake, which he easily converted. Determined not to let the Knights maintain their lead, Jun Min scored goals in the 12th and 15th minutes to take back the lead for the Prairie Fire. After this, the offensive games for both sides largely dissipated, as physical play in midfield meant that there would only be one more shot total in the rest of the half.

In the second half, the physical defensive mindset both teams adopted led to an increase in fouls. Neither team was able to accomplish much of anything, until Nib Hubacz snuck through the Prairie Fire defense, received a nice assist from Nathan Feiner, and slotted home a goal to level the score at two a side. This goal proved to be a fluke, as neither team was able to mount any sort of attack the rest of the half. Yellow cards for each team later in the half did little to change the outlook of the game. Overtime proved to be uneventful as well, save for a late Knox attack that netted multiple good looks but no goals.

"Wartburg is a good team, but we let another win slip through our grasp," said head coach Brian O'Connor. "We have faced some tough tests lately, but we need to finish games."

Knox looks forward to their next away game on Tuesday, against Augustana College at 7:00 p.m.
