Women's Basketball Faces Setback Versus Cornell

GALESBURG, Illinois—The Knox College Prairie Fire women's basketball team fell to the Cornell Rams today at home, losing 58-44. With the defeat, their record in conference play falls to 3-2 on the season.

The first half proved to be an offensive nightmare for both teams. Knox shot only 33.3% from the field, and only put up 24 points total in the first two quarters. Kyra Huffman went 3-for-5 from the field, scoring seven points to go along with three rebounds. Despite Huffman's good performance, the Prairie Fire struggled to find their rhythm in the paint, and they seemed off from their normal performances. Defensively, however, they were very strong, as they held Cornell to a pitiful 20.7% shooting while forcing 11 turnovers. Knox's strong defense kept them in the game, and led to them entering halftime up by five points.

However, the second half would prove to be the Prairie Fire's undoing. An 0-for-11 performance from beyond the arc did not help matters, as Cornell's defense made adjustments at the half that shut down Knox's motion offense. No Knox player managed to put up more than four points in the second half. Defensively, the Prairie Fire still played respectable defense, as they consistently hustled to the ball, but it couldn't make up for their offensive performance. As a result, they were outscored by 19 points and fell unceremoniously.

"We played well at times tonight," said head coach Emily Cline. "Cornell just got hot in the second half and our offense fell flat at the wrong time. We will get back to work to get ready for Lake Forest this weekend.

The Prairie Fire look to get back on track when they host Lake Forest College this Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
