GALESBURG, Illinois - The Knox Prairie Fire men's soccer team defeated the Lake Forest College Foresters this Saturday at Jorge Prats Field, winning by a final score of 2-0. Their third win in a row, the Prairie Fire are now 6-1 in Midwest Conference play.
The first half started relatively slow for the Prairie Fire, with the offense being unable to register a shot until the 19th minute. The quick pressing that the Foresters maintained meant that there was little space for Knox's passing to find any daylight. Knox's defense, however, also refused to give Lake Forest any good opportunities. Additionally, both teams physically challenged each other, with multiple yellow cards being shown to each team. As the half progressed, it became clear that neither side would be able to penetrate into their respective final thirds, and as the halftime whistle blew the score remained level.
Knox came into the second half looking like a changed team, as Knox was able to keep possession effectively. A close shot by Raphael Adeyemi sounded the alarm for Lake Forest, and the threat was followed through on in the 55th minute when Kgatiso Mangoegape sent home his first goal of the season, thanks in part to beautiful teamwork. The goal gave another jolt of energy to the Prairie Fire, and in the 72nd minute Lucas Piqueras sent home his fourth goal of the year, essentially icing the game. Knox was able to end on multiple good notes, and positive momentum seems to be carrying on.
"We took care of business today," said head coach Brian O'Connor. "We needed a win and we got it, now we just need to finish the regular season strong and prepare for a dogfight in the MWC Tournament."
The Prairie Fire will look to end the regular season with another win when they travel to Illinois College this Wednesday at 8 p.m.
