Softball Earns Conference Split with Monmouth

GALESBURG, Illinois - The Prairie Fire softball team earned a conference split with Monmouth on Saturday, their first MWC win over Monmouth since 2008.

The Fighting Scots plated a run in the first inning and another in the third inning of the first game to take an early lead. Monmouth added five more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to earn a 7-0 victory.

Knox pushed across four runs in the top of the first inning of game two to take the early advantage. The Fighting Scots scored a run of their own in the bottom half, but the Prairie Fire added a run in the fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead into the seventh inning. Knox was able to pitch around three hits in the final inning to come away with the 5-2 win.

Cammie Stein led the Prairie Fire with two hits on the day and Casey Hipp hit a big three-run double in game two.

Mimi Schweitzer allowed two earned runs to pick up her third victory of the season.

"We played very well overall today," said head coach Erin Rutledge. "So happy for Casey for coming up huge with that double in game two. Mimi has been pitching very well for us lately and it was nice to see her pick up another win."

Knox returns to action as they travel to Beloit on April 25.
