GALESBURG, Illinois - The Prairie Fire baseball team earned a split with Beloit in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday.
The Buccaneers scored five runs in the top of the first inning in game one, but Knox responded with four of their own in the bottom half. The Prairie Fire took a 7-5 lead in the third inning, but Beloit plated another five runs in the fifth inning to take a 10-7 lead. Knox scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to narrow the Buccaneer lead to one. Beloit took a 14-9 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but the Prairie Fire scored seven runs to earn a walk-off 16-14 victory.
Knox took an early 2-1 lead in the second game, but the Buccaneers scored five runs in the top of the second to take the lead. Knox came right back with a run in the bottom of the third and scored three in the fourth, but Beloit kept putting runs on the board and pulled away for a 20-11 win.
Kendall Ballman picked up seven hits on the day to lead the Prairie Fire. Matt Shover added five hits, including two home-runs for eight RBI in the doubleheader. Charlie Gibbons and Jack Maize also hit two home-runs on the day. Maize hit the walk-off home-run in the first game after Ballman tied the game with a three-run homer earlier in the inning.
Noah Sainato picked up the win in game one with two innings of relief.
"We played much better today overall," said associate head coach James Clark. "The win in game one was exciting, but we also had some good things in game two."
Knox returns to action as they travel to Beloit for another non-conference doubleheader on May 2.
