GALESBURG, Illinois - Knox softball hosted Monmouth today in a doubleheader. Monmouth won the first game 9-2 and Knox won the second game in 5 innings, 10-2.Â
The Scots scored early in game one taking the lead. Knox was able to close the gap 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning and tie it 2-2 in the bottom of the 6th. Knox lost the game in the top of the 7th allowing 7 runs.Â
In game 2, the Prairie Fire came ready to hit. Knox earned 2 runs in each of the first three innings. The Scots looked like they may come back with 2 runs in the 5th, but the Prairie Fire scored 4 runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game 10-2. Mimi Schweitzer earned her fourth win, three of which are against Monmouth.Â
The Knox softball team spread the wealth in hitting today. Cammie Stein went 2 for 7 but earned 1 run, and 3 RBIs on the day. One of her two hits was a home run. Maya McEwen was consistent at the plate going 4 for 6 and earning 2 runs.
Clare Hensley also homered today at the plate. Hensley went 2 for 3 in game 2 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs. Mady Ferris and Kenzie Funk added to the hits today with 1 RBI and 2 RBIs respectively.Â
"I am super proud of the team for coming back and stringing so may hits together to score in the second game. We scored almost every inning," said head coach Erin Rutledge. "It felt amazing to come in and short game one of our biggest rivals! Complete team effort on the day!"
The Knox softball team returns to action Saturday, May 8th against Cornell in Galesburg.Â
