The Knox Prairie Fire baseball team ran into the buzzsaw that was the St. Norbert College Green Knights this Saturday morning, falling 18-2. The loss leaves their record at 0-7 on the season.
The Prairie Fire tried to use their baserunning prowess and batting eye to score early as Benjamin Bucher was able to get into scoring position in the top of the first inning, but nothing came of it. Unfortunately for Knox, the Green Knights tattooed the baseball right out of the gate, as they pushed a run across in the bottom of the first inning and 6 in the second. Knox starter Tucker Sams gave a good effort on the mound and forced a solid amount of weak contact, but St. Norbert used a string of singles and doubles around some key errors to keep the runs coming. While Knox's offense was mostly quiet on the day, Chase Thies launched a 2-run dinger in the top of the sixth inning to provide the Prairie Fire's only runs of the game. With the deficit looking steep, the game ended in the seventh inning.
"We did not come to play today," said associate head coach James Clark. "We had put a string of good games together over the previous few days, but today did not look like the same team. We will get back to work to figure out what we need to do to go back to the team from a few days ago that was getting better every game."
Knox will try to win their first game of the season when they play the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
