Women's Basketball Extends Win Streak to Eight in Victory Over Monmouth

GALESBURG, Illinois - The Prairie Fire women's basketball team defeated Monmouth 57-53 on Saturday. Knox extends their win streak to eight, matching a program best.

The Prairie Fire jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter, but the Fighting Scots hit a three at the buzzer to bring the game within two heading into the second period.

The score remained close for most of the second quarter and Knox held just a 27-23 at halftime.

Monmouth scored the first four points of the third quarter, but the Prairie Fire responded with a 13-7 run to close out the period with a six point lead.

Knox held a 48-40 lead with 6:36 to play before the Fighting Scots used an 8-0 run to tie the game with 3:31 left in the game. Kylee Callahan responded with a pair of free throws and the Prairie Fire retained the lead the rest of the way.

Callahan was the stand out performer for the Fire as she put up 23 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Kristin Herndon was the next leading scorer with 14 points and eight rebounds.

"Monmouth is always a tough opponent and brings a great atmosphere to the gym," said head coach Kira Mowen. "It was nice to get a little revenge after they beat us in the conference tournament to end last season."

The next game for Knox is away as they travel to Lawrence on January 31. It looks to be a really exciting matchup and yet another chance for the women to keep their undefeated conference record.
