AUBURNDALE, Florida - Knox softball ends the day with a split, beating College of St. Scholastica and losing to Lakeland University.
Knox and St. Scholastica battled for a long, hot and scoreless five innings with no runs across the plate. Finally in the top of the sixth inning, the Prairie Fire broke through and had a few make their way around the bases. The inning started off with a quick two outs, but Knox rallied and scored three runs in the sixth. St. Scholastica were shut down quickly in the bottom of the sixth by the Prairie Fire defense. Knox added a little extra cushion in the final inning and scored two more runs. The game ended with a 5-1 Prairie Fire win.
With some momentum Knox entered game two against Lakeland. A rough start left the Fire chasing ten runs after the top first inning. Knox attempted to close the gap and scored two runs in the bottom of the first. Knox continued to battle for five innings, but couldn't catch up and ended the game with a 16-4 loss.
Liv Dunn led the team with five hits. Haylee Carpenter trailed right behind with four hits for the day. Lacey Miller and Maddie Hicks both recorded a double for the day, along with Dunn and Carpenter. Ally Hyde earned a complete game win with seven strikeouts against St. Scholastica.
"Really, really proud of game one today",stated head coach Erin Clark "St. Scholastica is a high caliber team. I had been hopeful to carry our energy from game one to game two, as we are often more successful in game two than game one. I hope we are able to learn from game two today and move forward".
Knos softball enjoys another day off tomorrow, and will continue play on March 19 against University of Minnesota Morris and Washington and Jefferson College.
