GALESBURG, Ill. — In its last three matches, the Knox College women's soccer team had tied twice and lost once by a single goal. But Monmouth built up a three-goal lead in the first half and made it stand up as the Prairie Fire (1-11-2, 0-4-1 Midwest Conference fell to the Fighting Scots (4-8-3, 2-3-1 MWC) on Tuesday afternoon at Jorge Prats Field 3-1.
Danielle Beach scored all three Monmouth goals in the opening half to give the visitors a comfortable lead. In the second stanza, Knox caught the Scots perhaps resting on their laurels when fifth-year Alex Halleck lined up a long free kick from more than 25 yards out and buried a shot at the top of the back of the net for her third goal of the year.
The Prairie Fire had a couple more scoring opportunities, but shots sailed just wide or high in each instance, allowing Monmouth to escape Galesburg with its fourth win of the year.
- The Fighting Scots have won the last two meetings, but Knox had gone 7-0-1 in the previous eight matchups in the series.
- Halleck's goal was the first for the Prairie Fire in five MWC games this fall.
- Only senior Aleene Ramirez (4) has more goals this season than Halleck.
