GALESBURG, Ill. — Four different Prairie Fire players scored — as did an opposing player — as the Knox College men's soccer team (6-7-2, 3-2-1 Midwest Conference) defeated Monmouth (2-10-2, 0-5-1 MWC) at Jorge Prats Field on Wednesday afternoon, 5-2. Senior Adrian Segura and sophomore Kestervens Dera each had a goal and an assist for the Prairie Fire to lead them to their third straight victory.
Knox jumped out to a 1-0 lead quickly when junior Arito Nakamichi sent a free kick into the box that a Fighting Scot defender tried to head away only to deflect the ball into his own net. Less than 10 minute later, Nakamichi got his goal when fifth-year Eusebio King-Mills sent a long pass down the far sideline and Nakamichi dribbled the ball into the box and beat the keeper, his third goal of the season.
After the intermission, Monmouth threatened to make it a game by scoring in the 53rd minute, only to have Segura score on a perfect Dera cross just a minute later. Segura returned the favor in the 65th minute, setting up Dera for his team-leading sixth goal of the year. Barely four minutes later, sophomore Apostolos Karamperis drilled a screaming left-footer from 20 yards out past the diving keeper into the upper left corner of the net for a 5-1 advantage. The Fighting Scots fought until the end, however, tacking on a goal with 5.3 seconds to play.
- The five goals are the most for the Prairie Fire since a 5-0 win at Illinois College five years ago.
- The last time Knox scored five goals on its home field was six years ago, also against Monmouth in a 5-1 triumph.
- The Prairie Fire are sitting in third place in the Midwest Conference with 10 points with two games to play.
Knox, which is 3-1 at home this season, will play its homecoming (and final) game at Jorge Prats Field this fall on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. against Lawrence University (2-8-4, 1-2-2 MWC). Fans are encouraged to get there early to thank the six members of the team who will be playing for the final time at home as part of Senior Day. Live video and stats will be available through the official athletics website of Knox College, PrairieFire.Knox.edu.
