Women Battle Cornell College to Scoreless Draw

Knox held a 9-6 advantage in shots, but neither team could dent the scoreboard

GALESBURG, Ill. — In the final home game of the fall for the Knox women's soccer team, the Prairie Fire battled for 90 minutes with Cornell College, but neither team could dent the scoreboard as the played to a scoreless draw on a blustery Monday afternoon at Jorge Prats Field. Knox (1-12-3, 0-5-2 Midwest Conference) had a 9-6 edge in shots, seven coming in the second half, but they could not get any of the four on goal past the keeper for the Rams (2-11-1, 1-4-1 MWC).

In the opening half, Cornell spent most of the half on the attack but could only occasionally get a shot off against the Prairie Fire defensive line. Only once was first-year goalkeeper Darby Wallig truly tested on a high shot that she was able to get a hand on and bat to herself for one of her three saves on the day.

Knox went on the offensive after the intermission, pushing play into the Rams half consistently. First-year Isabella Urrutia Flores fired off four shots, two on goal, and senior Aleene Ramirez two more in her final home game. But Cornell keeper Cassie Stevens was there every time.

  • Wallig recorded her second shutout of the season, both coming in scoreless ties in league play.
  • Knox's one victory and all three ties came on its home field this fall.

The Prairie Fire will conclude their season on Saturday when they play at Ripon College (4-10-3, 0-5-1 MWC) at 1:30 p.m. The Red Hawks will first host Lawrence on Wednesday evening. Fans that want to tune in can keep up with live video and stats that will be available through the official athletics website of Knox College, PrairieFire.Knox.edu.
