Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tough Stretch Continues in 83-70 Loss at Coe

Carl Dortch was the lone Prairie Fire player in double figures with 13 points

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Knox men's basketball team's recent struggles continued at Coe College on Friday evening as the host Kohawks knocked off the Prairie Fire at Kohawk Arena, 83-70. Cooper Nailor scored a game-high 22 points for Coe (6-4) while junior Carl Dortch was the lone player for Knox (2-9) to reach double figures with 13.

The Prairie Fire have dropped seven straight games and never held the lead in tonight's contest. Three straight Kohawk 3-pointers was part of a 10-0 run to give Coe an early 12-2 lead. The score differential proceeded to oscillate between six and 12 points for the remainder of the half as Knox could not gain significant ground nor could the Kohawks build upon their early advantage. By halftime, Coe enjoyed a 49-38 lead as Nailor and Bennett Sherry each provided 13 points.

But after the intermission, the Kohawks quickly boosted their lead to 20 points with Nailor and Brady Klahn provided five of the first seven Coe field goals in the first four minutes of the second half. Knox could not make a dent in that deficit until barely four minutes remained thanks to an 8-0 run, six of those points courtesy of junior Russell Wright. But there was not nearly enough time for the Prairie Fire to put a scare into Coe, though they continued to whittle away until the final buzzer, which sophomore Jakob Morgenstern beat with a layup to end the night's scoring.

  • Knox has dropped seven straight contests since an 84-80 victory over Blackburn in its home opener on Nov. 23.
  • Dortch, a Galesburg native, was 6-of-9 from the floor with a free throw to account for his team-high 13 points.
  • Senior Sean Gallery had his streak of 18 straight scoring in double figures come to an end as the Kohawk defense held him to eight.
  • While the Prairie Fire outrebounded Coe, 38-34, not a single Knox player had more than five rebounds.

Knox will take some time to enjoy a holiday respite before returning to Galesburg with a chance to ring in the new year with a victory when it hosts Simpson College (2-8) at Memorial Gymnasium on Dec. 31 at 3 p.m. Live video and stats will be available through PrairieFire.Knox.edu, the official website of Knox College athletics.
