Softball Drops MWC Doubleheader to Cornell

GALESBURG, Illinois - The Knox women's softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Cornell College this afternoon falling 7-18 in the first games and 1-8 in the second game.

In game one, the Rams took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, The Prairie Fire were quick to fire back with doubles from Londyn Nelson, Maya McEwen, and Liv Dunn bringing in five runs in the second inning. Knox headed into the third inning with a 5-3 lead. Even with three more runs from the Rams in the third inning, the Prairie Fire answered with two more runs off sacrifice flies from Nelson and McEwen. The Prairie Fire took a 7-6 lead going into the fourth inning. After a fourth inning with no runs from either team, Cornell brought in one run in the fifth and eleven runs in the sixth inning to finish off the Prairie Fire.

In game two, both teams played two intense innings to start the game, but neither brought in a run. The Rams broke the deadlock in the third inning with a run. Cornell then added another two runs in the fourth inning. Knox continued to fight hard with hits from Maddie Poetzinger and Kylie Thomson in the fourth inning but headed into the fifth inning down 3-0. After a three-run inning from the Rams in the sixth inning, Knox replied with a run off a single from Poetzinger. Even with a strong performance from the Prairie Fire, the Rams managed to close out Knox with two runs to close out the seventh inning.

The Prairie Fire was led today by a strong performance from Poetzinger, with four hits through both games.

"Our bats finally came alive today and it was exciting to see," said coach Casey Hipp. "One bad inning in game one put us in a position where we were unable to recover and in game two we just had too many strikeouts. But all in all, I think we had a pretty good showing today and we just have to stay hungry and keep working hard" added Hipp.

The Prairie Fire will look to bounce back tomorrow as the team travels to Wisconsin to face off against Lawrence University. Both games of the doubleheader begin at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM
