INDANOLA, Iowa — When junior Juan Perez Mejia scored on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute, he and the Knox College men's soccer team seemed to be in control with a 3-1 lead over host Simpson. But the Storm (4-2) responded with three unanswered goals, the last with under eight minutes to play, to rally for a 4-3 triumph at Buxton Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Prairie Fire dropped its second straight contest to fall to 2-3-1 on the season.
Knox had three consecutive goals of its own, the first two barely a minute apart in the first half after falling behind early. Junior Arito Nakamichi took a perfectly placed pass from 20 yards away from fifth-year Eusebio King-Mills and fired a shot from 25 yards out past the diving keeper in the 24th minute. Sophomore Apostolos Karamperis followed with a goal off a beautiful cross from his classmate, Tomás Perez.
But Simpson's Ronaldo Ordaz responded to Perez Mejia's goal with back-to-back tallies of his own, tying the game with little more than 12 minutes to play. In the 83rd minute, Zach Kline — who had assisted on the first Storm goal — snuck a shot into the goal for the game-winner.
- All three goals for the Prairie Fire were the first of each scorer's career.
- Simpson outshot Knox by an 18-12 margin and had a whopping 14-1 advantage in corner kicks, though neither side scored off of one.
- The Prairie Fire had not lost when leading by two goals since a 2022 Midwest Conference Tournament contest against Lake Forest, also a 4-3 defeat.
Knox continues its eight-game road trip to start the 2024 season on Sept. 18 when the team travels to Naperville, Illinois, to take on North Central College in Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. The game will begin at 7 p.m. with live video and stats of the contest accessible through the official athletics website of Knox College, PrairieFire.Knox.edu.
