GALESBURG, Ill. — The Knox College athletics department announced its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for events played between Sept. 17-23, with the honors going to Aleene Ramirez of the women's soccer team and Jonathan Walker from the football squad.
Ramirez, a senior captain from San Antonio, Texas, made Senior Day a memorable one by scoring three goals and assisting on another to lead the Prairie Fire to an 8-0 victory over visiting Eureka College. Her hat trick matched her career scoring output and played a big role in the women's soccer team snapping a 26-game winless streak. The forward is the first Knox player to score multiple goals in a game in three years, and the first with three in five years. Ramirez was also named the Midwest Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Performer of the Week.
A sophomore punter from Melbourne, Florida, Walker played his part in trying to subdue a University of Chicago team that had defeated Knox last year by a 63-0 score. His first punt was his longest of the season at 51 yards, which was downed at the Maroons' 5-yard line. In the third quarter, he added a 47-yard boot that was muffed, resulting in a 49-yard net. For the game, he averaged 42.75 yards on four punts, though the Prairie Fire came up short in the end, 27-13. Walker was an All-Midwest Conference Second Team punter as a first-year in 2023.
The Knox Athletes of the Week will be announced every Tuesday afternoon throughout the athletic calendar.
