Mariano Provides Game-Winner in Home-Opening Win

Junior Emmanuel Mariano lifted Knox to a 2-1 victory over Coe College.

GALESBURG, Ill. — After eight games on the road to start the 2024 season, the Knox men's soccer team could honestly say, "There's no place like home." The Prairie Fire (3-5-1) snapped a four-game skid in their home opener by fending off visiting Coe College (3-4-1) on Tuesday evening at Jorge Prats Field, 2-1. Junior Emmanuel Mariano supplied the game-winning tally in the 65th minute off a rebound on a saved shot, and a stout defensive effort in a physical match that featured eight yellow cards preserved the victory.

Coe quickly knotted the game at one apiece early in the second half when Tinashe Manyanga sent a free kick into the box that Brandon Kostelny was able to put away with a swift right foot. But Knox was not going to settle for a tie with the Kohawks as it did in last year's matchup.

First-year Thomas Sánchez Madden caught up to a beautiful pass over the top of the defense from sophomore Luis Magalhaes, and although his shot was deflected enough to keep it out of the net, the ball trickled to the other side of the goal. Mariano seized his opportunity by sprinting in to put it away with his left foot and 25:05 to play.

  • The lone goal of the first half was provided by sophomore Carlos Rebello da Silva — the first of his career — on a free kick from 35 yards out that was deflected just enough by a Coe defender's head to catch the Kohawk goalkeeper off-balance.
  • Fifth-year keeper Nicolas Lantzendorffer made four saves on the day, two within the seven minutes after the go-ahead goal.
  • Knox has won its last two home openers, having defeated Augustana College last year by a 4-0 count.
  • Five of the eight yellow cards were issued to Coe players, and three were handed out in the final 10 minutes as daylight was quickly fading.

Just when the Prairie Fire got their first taste of the home life, they are headed back on the road for their next two games as they start conference play at Grinnell next Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 4 p.m. Live video and stats of the contest will be accessible through the official athletics website of Knox College, PrairieFire.Knox.edu.
