CARLINVILLE, Ill. — After the Knox College men's soccer team saw its two-goal, first-half lead slip away following the intermission, sophomore Tomas Ramos made sure the outcome fell in the Prairie Fire's favor by scoring the game-winner with barely five minutes to play as Knox (2-1-1) defeated host Blackburn College (0-2-2) on Friday afternoon.
The Prairie Fire put the pressure on in the waning minutes, and a shot that was deflected into the air turned out to be the opportunity Ramos desired. The Battlin' Beaver keeper leapt to corral the ball, but he was thwarted by one of his own teammates who desperately tried to clear the ball with a header. As the two collided, the ball bounced past the keeper, allowing Ramos to scoot in and put the ball into the back of the net for his first career goal.
Blackburn had one more golden opportunity in the box less than a minute later, but a shot attempt by A.J. Blanco passed just above the crossbar, and Knox was never threatened again.
- Ramos teamed up with his classmate Kestervens Dera to give the Prairie Fire an early lead, assisting in Dera's first career tally barely two minutes into the contest.
- Dera enjoyed the feeling so much he added a second goal — unassisted this time — shortly before halftime.
- Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Nicolas Lantzendorffer turned away three shots in the first half before giving way to first-year Alejandro Carlani in the second stanza.
- The three goals were Knox's largest offensive output in nearly a year, matching the total from a 3-1 victory over Illinois Wesleyan last Sept. 19, and its largest scoring total in a road contest since a 4-2 win at Monmouth on Oct. 5, 2021.
- The last Prairie Fire player with two goals in a game was Christian Telles on Sept. 16, 2023 in a 4-2 win over Simpson College.
- No Knox player had scored a game-winner as late in a game as Ramos since Adetayo Adefioye tallied a golden goal against Spalding University in a 3-2 overtime triumph on Sept. 14, 2019.
The Prairie Fire will head to the Quad Cities next for a showdown at Augustana College (0-1-1) at Thorson-Lucken Field on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. Knox would like nothing better than to avenge a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Vikings last year.
