Knox Men Cut Down by Foresters, 75-66

Sean Gallery led all players with 26 points

GALESBURG, Ill. — In a physical game that featured 46 fouls and 53 free throw attempts, the visiting Lake Forest Foresters men's basketball team managed to leave Memorial Gymnasium with a 75-66 victory over Knox College on Wednesday evening. Alex Knight and Alex Forowycz each tallied 20 points for Lake Forest (5-8, 2-2 Midwest Conference) while senior Sean Gallery as the lone player for the Prairie Fire (3-10, 0-4 MWC) to reach double figures with 26 points.

The evening began quite well for Knox as it opened up an early nine-point advantage, 15-6, as Gallery scored eight of those points and the Fire hit 6-of-11 field goals in the opening five-and--a-half minutes. But the Foresters quickly cut that lead down by scoring 14 straight points (eight courtesy of Knight) during a 21-1 run that spanned more than eight minutes. Knox fell behind by as many as a dozen in the opening stanza before heading to the locker room trailing 40-32.

Twice in the second half, the Prairie Fire closed to within five points on 3-pointers, first by first-year Willie Rogers III to open the half and again by first-year Daunte Smith midway through the period, making it a 54-49 contest. It could have been even closer, but Knox misfired on four consecutive foul shots prior to Smith's long ball; the Prairie Fire finished the night 15-of-26 (.577) from the charity stripe, though Lake Forest wasn't much more accurate at 63.0 percent (17-of-27).

The Foresters did not let Knox get any closer, scoring the next six points and maintaining an eight-point edge at the very least the rest of the game.

  • Gallery finished the night 8-of-16 from the floor with a trio of triples and 7-of-9 at the line to allow him to post his sixth 20-point game of the season and 16th of his career.
  • Capitalizing on turnovers proved to be the difference in the game as Lake Forest converted 19 Knox turnovers into 23 points while the Prairie Fire managed just 11 points off 14 Forester miscues.
  • Both teams had a pair of players foul out — Gallery and sophomore Josh Stewart (four points, team highs of nine rebounds and four assists) for Knox, and Cristian Rodriguez (14 points, five rebounds) and John Mayhew (two points) for Lake Forest.
  • The visiting team has won each of the last six games in this series, and the Foresters improved to 69-51 all-time against the Prairie Fire.

Knox has the weekend off before finishing up a three-game home stand with Illinois College (10-4, 3-2 MWC) coming to town on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Tipoff at Memorial Gymnasium will be at 7:30 p.m. with live video and stats available through PrairieFire.Knox.edu, the official website of Knox College athletics.
