Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Offense Leads Women Past Foresters

Knox scored its most points in nine years as six players reached double figures, led by Bria Medina's 23

GALESBURG, Ill.

As the Knox College women's basketball team resumed Midwest Conference play this evening at Memorial Gymnasium, the Prairie Fire entered the game with an eight-game winning streak over Lake Forest College. Knox left no doubt that the streak would continue as the Prairie Fire (7-6, 2-2 MWC) took care of the visiting Foresters (2-10) in commanding fashion with a 119-85 victory.

The big story of the evening was Knox's electrifying offense that totaled 119 points, the fourth-most points scored in a game in program history and just nine points shy of the team record set in the 2015-16 campaign. Efficient shooting from the field (61.1 percent) allowed six players to finish the night with at least 13 points, led by sophomore guard Bria Medina with 23. Fifth-year guard Sarina Dacio contributed 20 points of her own, going 9-of-12 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers.

Junior guard Kylee Callahan followed continued her impressive shooting of late, knocking down 7-of-9 shots and 4-of-5 at the line to amass 19 points in just 20 minutes. First-year forward Nayeli Nidez Acuña contributed 18 points, while fifth-year guard Haylee Carpenter added 15 and first-year guard Izzy Robinson 13 more, showing off the quality and depth of the Prairie Fire bench.

Knox started out fast, quickly growing its lead to 11 halfway through the first quarter. The Foresters clawed back into the game, however, with Anika Kinnear sinking a 3-pointer with less than a minute to go in the quarter, closing the gap to 29-24. But sophomore guard Leah Schoonover returned the favor with a trifecta of her own, and Nidez Acuña converted a pair of free throws just before the buzzer for a 10-point lead at the end of the quarter, 34-24.

Callahan wasted no time draining a three from deep early on to get the second quarter underway. Knox continued to bury its shots and ballooned the lead to 23 on a Dacio layup. Despite constant effort from the Foresters to cut the deficit, the Prairie Fire's shooting kept them in the driver's seat throughout the quarter, entering halftime up 21, 66-45.

As good as Knox was in the first half, it was even better in the third quarter, outscoring Lake Forest in the stanza, 33-13, while shooting 72.2 percent. The 41-point advantage allowed Knox to comfortably cruise to their ninth-straight win against Lake Forest and second conference victory of the season.

  • Carpenter's three triples on the night boosted her career 3-point field goal tally to an even 100, making her the eighth player in Knox history to reach the century mark.
  • Knox's last loss to Lake Forest dates back to Jan 11, 2020.
  • The Foresters' Rebecca Christodoulou, the second-leading scorer in the Midwest Conference, led all players with 27 points.
  • The scoring record was set at Illinois Tech on Dec. 11, 2015, in a 128-41 victory.

The Prairie Fire will return back to action on Tuesday, Jan. 14 to take on the Illinois College Lady Blues (5-9, 2-3 MWC). Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Memorial Gymnasium.
