Football Stymied by UChicago

The Prairie Fire were held to 159 total yards

GALESBURG, Ill. ­— The Knox football team struggled to contain the University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon at the Knosher Bowl as the Maroons defeated the Prairie Fire, 52-0, to remain undefeated (3-0) in the Midwest Conference and improve to 3-1 on the season. Knox, which was held to 159 total yards, dropped to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the league.

UChicago utilized a balanced offensive attack that amassed 216 yards on the ground and 217 through the air, averaging 7.9 yards per play. Jack Ruff through for 186 yards and a pair of touchdowns while completing 8-of-13 passes. Avondre Kelly was the top rusher for the Maroons with 56 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.

The Prairie Fire ground game, which was averaging 174 yards a game entering the day, was limited to 67 yards on 38 attempts. Junior wide receiver Mario Byrd had the most success for Knox, catching four of Reese Miller's eight completions for 63 yards, including a 43-yard bomb.

The game opened with a UChicago touchdown on the game's opening drive on a 45-yard strike from Ruff to Luke Degner. The Maroons crossed the goal line twice more before the end of the first quarter for a 21-0 lead.

A 34-yard field goal and a 9-yard touchdown run in the second quarter allowed UChicago to go into the locker room with a 31-0 halftime lead. Degner caught another scoring strike in the third quarter, and Kelly ran another in from 24 yards out on the first play after the Maroons forced a fumble on a sack. Kelly completed the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 5-yard jaunt into the end zone to cap a 10-play drive.

  • The Knox defense did have a big stop on a 4th-and-1 play in the final minute of the first half at their own 31.
  • Sophomore linebacker Chase Caldwell and first-year safety Jay Edgeston each had six tackles to led the Prairie Fire defense.
  • Miller ended his day 8-of-19 throwing the ball for 92 yards, to go with 22 yards on 12 rushes.
  • UChicago is now 14-4 against Knox all-time, winning each of the last seven meetings. The last Prairie Fire win was a 20-17 decision in 1984.

Knox will play at the Knosher Bowl again next Saturday, Oct. 11 for its homecoming game when Grinnell College (1-3, 1-2 MWC) comes to town. The Pioneers had their struggles today as well, losing at home to Monmouth College, 49-9.
