BELOIT, Wis. — Trailing 2-0 with under 15 minutes to play, Knox College women's soccer first-year Eliana Juarez scored her fifth goal of the season, but the Prairie Fire were unable to record another goal in a 2-1 loss at Beloit (2-7-1, 1-1-1 Midwest Conference) on Saturday afternoon. Knox dropped to 3-7-1 on the season and 0-3 in the league.
Prairie Fire sophomore goalkeeper Darby Wallig was peppered early in the contest, saving three shots in the first five minutes, but Knox took control of the tempo, firing off three shots that were turned away over the next 15 minutes.
Sarah Connors took on the role of the terminator for the Buccaneers, not only scoring the game's first goal in the 31st minute, but tallying another in the 50th minute shortly after the intermission. Midway through the period, she tried to make it a hat trick, only to be denied by Wallig.
Juarez finally broke through in the 77th minute, beating the Beloit keeper from the right of the box back across the back left of the net. Knox was able to put one more shot on goal with five minutes to play, but senior Isabella Shubert's free kick from 25 yards out was unable to get past the keeper.
"Today was a 90-minute battle, which was a must for us," Knox Head Coach Annie Gerdes said. "It was a really close game, and I am happy with how we responded to going down."
- Juarez is the first Prairie Fire players to score five goals in a season since Lydia Mitchell scored 16 in 2021 (Emma Art also had five that year).
- Knox maintained the shot advantage, 13-8 overall and 8-6 on goal.
- The Prairie Fire scored their first goal against the Buccaneers in four years having been shut out the last four meetings; they had won the previous six contests in the series.
Knox returns home to play its first-ever night game at Jorge Prats Field following the installation of lights at the facility. The Prairie Fire will host rival Monmouth College (5-3-2, 1-0-1 MWC) on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. for the historic game, which will be streamed live through Knox portal on Hudl — watchmidwestsports.com/knox — with live stats also available on the official website of Knox College Athletics, PrairieFire.Knox.edu.
