Women Pick Up First Win Behind the Tucson Trio

Bria Medina, Kylee Callahan and Nayeli Nidez Acuña all came up big at Benedictine

LISLE, Ill. — Thanks to 34 points from junior Bria Medina and double-doubles from senior Kylee Callahan and sophomore Nayeli Nidez Acuña — all three of whom are from Tucson, Arizona — the Knox College women's basketball picked up its first victory of the season by defeating Benedictine University on the road Tuesday night, 93-80. The Prairie Fire (1-3) shot 53.6 percent from the floor while holding the Eagles (4-2) to just 38.3 percent to earn the 13-point win.

Medina enjoyed her fourth career 30-point game (the most in Knox history) and became the sixth Prairie Fire player to surpass 1,000 points by knocking down 12-of-18 field goals with a pair of 3-pointers and all eight of her free throw attempts. She also nearly gave the Prairie Fire three double-doubles thanks to dishing out a career-high nine assists while playing all 40 minutes.

Callahan played every second as well, going 11-of-17 from the floor and 3-of-3 at the foul line while hauling in a dozen rebounds, not to mention five helpers. Then there was Nidez Acuña with 19 points and 10 boards, who also was perfect at the charity stripe, going 5-for-5.

Knox only briefly fell behind once on this evening, 13-11, and 10 seconds later, Medina drove to the rim and tied the score with a layup. By the end of the first quarter, the Prairie Fire lead was just four, 21-17, but an eight-point run in the second quarter boosted their advantage into double digits at 35-22. When Benedictine put up the next four points to close the gap to nine, Medina drove for another layup, and Knox's lead was never below double digits again, growing to as large as 20 points before the intermission before settling for a 51-35 edge at the break.

Both Nidez Acuña and senior Carly Smith picked up their fourth fouls early in the fourth quarter, which helped the Eagles get back within 10 with just under four minutes remaining. That was as close as the threat would come, however, as Knox wrapped up the road win.

  • Medina is the fastest of the six players to score 1,000 points, doing so in her 55th game. The previous fastest was Jarrelyn McCall '20, who reached the milestone in her 77th game.
  • Medina entered the game ranked third in Division III with 26.7 points per game, and is now averaging 28.0 ppg.
  • Callahan, who scored her most points since putting up a career-best 31 nearly two years ago against Manhattanville, has three double-doubles in four games this year, while Nidez Acuña has a pair.
  • The Prairie Fire's field goal percentage (.536) is the team's best since hitting a program-record 61.1 percent against Lake Forest last January.

Knox has a week off for final exams before opening Midwest Conference play at Illinois College (2-2) on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m. The game will be live streamed with stats available through PrairieFire.Knox.edu, the official website of Knox College Athletics, courtesy of Illinois College.
