Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Shooting Woes Plague Men in Loss to Beloit

Knox shot 31.5 percent from the floor but a season-high 95 percent at the foul line

GALESBURG, Ill. — While the Knox men's college basketball team held visiting Beloit to under 40 percent from the floor, its own shooting woes proved to be too much to overcome as the Buccaneers (9-14, 4-10 Midwest Conference) avenged their loss to the Prairie Fire (4-19, 1-13 MWC) earlier this season with a 75-59 decision on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium.

Senior Sean Gallery did not let Senior Day go to waste, however, as he scored a game-high 20 points, half of which came from a perfect performance at the line. The foul line was the one place Knox did shoot the ball well, hitting a season-high 95 percent (19-of-20) of its free throws. Junior Russell Wright joined Gallery in double figures with 11 points.

Azeez Ganiyu led Beloit with a 17-point, 14-rebound double-double, and three other Buccaneers scored at least 10 points.

Beloit led wire-to-wire, scoring the game's first six points before Gallery sank two foul shots more than four minutes into the contest. The Prairie Fire were able to close within a single point on two occasions, the second after senior Derek Sult scored on a tip-in two minutes later.

But the Buccaneers gradually extended its advantage throughout the first half until Knox went scoreless for nearly seven straight minutes during a 10-0 Beloit run, making it a 29-15 lead. A 3-pointer by junior Cole Andrews in the final minute kept the Prairie Fire within 11 at the break, 31-20.

When Wright opened up the second stanza with a bucket in the paint, cutting the deficit to nine, there was hope for Knox to create a storybook finish on its Senior Day. The Buccaneers dashed those hopes, answering with a 3-pointer by Anthony Carter, and the difference was never below 10 points again.

  • Knox finished the game shooting 31.5 percent overall (17-of-54) and a nearly identical 31.6 percent from behind the arc (6-of-19).
  • Andrews led the Prairie Fire with eight rebounds and Gallery had half of the team's eight assists.
  • Knox has lost eight straight games since defeating Beloit on its home court on Jan. 18.

Knox has two games remaining in its season, both on the road, with a trip to Illinois College (16-8, 9-6 MWC) up first on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Tip-off at Sherman Gymnasium will be at 7:30 p.m. with a live stream and stats available through PrairieFire.Knox.edu, the official website of Knox College athletics.
