Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Medina's 21 Leads Women to 74-52 Victory over Beloit

The sophomore stole the show on Senior Day

GALESBURG, Ill. โ€” Sophomore Bria Medina stole the show on Senior Day, scoring a game-high 21 points to lead the Knox College women's basketball team to a 74-52 victory over visiting Beloit College on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium. All 11 active players on the Prairie Fire (14-9, 9-5 MWC) scored at least one point in handing the Buccaneers (2-21, 1-13 MWC) their eight consecutive loss.

Medina was busy all over the court as she led Knox with six assists and added five rebounds and three stealsย while hitting 8-of-12 from the floor and 5-of-6 at the foul line. Fifth-year Sarina Dacio added 10 points โ€” all in the first half โ€” pushing her career total over 1,200, fourth most in program history, and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

Although Beloit had the first bucket of the game, it didn't take the Prairie Fire long to control the game, jumping out to a 13-3 lead thanks to a 3-pointer and a pair of three-point plays. The Buccaneers' Kaitlin Davis popped a triple to close the gap to six at 18-12, but Knox went on a 7-0 run to end the first quarter with the Callahan sisters โ€” fifth-year Mae and junior Kylee โ€” each dropped in a layup and fifth-year Haylee Carpenter drained her first of three 3-pointers in the game.

The run continued into the second quarter, boosting the lead to 17. And by outscoring Beloit by a 14-2 margin over the last five-plus minutes of the half, capped by a putback layup by junior Kendall Lade just before the buzzer, Knox cruised into the locker room with a 45-19 advantage.

Kylee Callahan drained a trey and Media laid one in to start the second half to open up a 31-point bulge, and the difference reached as many as 34. With there being no doubt as to the outcome, both teams substituted liberally during the fourth quarter.

  • The Prairie Fire shot 42.2 percent (27-of-64) for the game and 29.6 percent (8-of-27) from the perimeter, compared to Beloit's 38.2 percent 21-of-55) on field goals and 23.1 percent (3-of-13) behind the arc.
  • Knox turned 19 Buccaneer turnovers into 24 points.
  • Medina surpassed 900 points for her career (920), while Kylee Callahan is just 16 shy of 1,000, a total only four Prairie Fire players have reached.

Knox, now with a one-game lead over Cornell College for the fourth and final berth at the Midwest Conference Tournament, has two games remaining in the regular season, both on the road. First up is a trip to Illinois College (10-14, 7-8 MWC) on Wednesday, Feb. 19 with tip-off at Sherman Gymnasium set for 5:30 p.m. A live stream and stats will be available through the official website of Knox College athletics, PrairieFire.Knox.edu.
