Men Shut Down by Ripon

Willie Rogers III led Knox with 11 points thanks to a trio of triples

GALESBURG, Ill. — Offense proved to be hard to come by for the Knox College men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon as visiting Ripon pulled away from the Prairie Fire, 78-55, at Memorial Gymnasium. The Red Hawks (10-11, 7-5 Midwest Conference) pulled into a tie for fourth in the league standings with the victory, while Knox (4-17, 1-11 MWC) suffered its sixth straight defeat.

Four players scored in double figures for Ripon, led by Kolby Williams with 15 to go with 10 rebounds for a double-double. As a team, the Red Hawks knocked down 12 triples, shooting 41.4 percent from the perimeter and 43.8 percent (28-of-64) overall.

First-year Willie Rogers III led the Prairie Fire with 11 points thanks to a trio of trifectas, and senior Sean Gallery added 10 points while also grabbing his 500th career rebound, the eighth Knox player to reach the milestone and first in 27 years.

Ripon scored the first six points and seemed to never stop adding to its lead. Knox did threaten to get back in the game late in the first half with an 8-0 run fueled by two of Rogers' long balls, closing the gap to six again at 23-17. But the Red Hawks outscored the Fire for the last five minutes of the half, 12-2, to take a 16-point advantage into the locker room.

Knox did come out firing in the second half as Rogers popped another trey and Gallery scored on the break after a steal. A Cade Tackmier 3-pointer capped a 13-4 spurt to give Ripon a 20-point lead with 16 minutes to go. That difference was built up to as many as 29, leaving the outcome of the game without a doubt.

  • Knox shot 36.5 percent (19-of-52) for the contest and 18.2 percent (4-of-22) from distance.
  • Ripon has won 27 of the last 28 meetings, with the lone loss coming last season in Galesbury, 54-49.
  • Galesburg native Carl Dortch provided 12 points off the bench for the Prairie Fire, his fourth game in double figures this season.

Knox travels down the road to the Midwest Conference leader, Monmouth (16-5, 10-2 MWC) on Tuesday, Feb. 12, in an attempt to avenge its five-point loss to the Fighting Scots a week ago. Tip-off at Glennie Gymnasium will be at 7:30 p.m. with a live stream and stats available through PrairieFire.Knox.edu, the official website of Knox College athletics.
