EDINBURGH, Ind. — The Knox College men's golf team improved its team score every round of the SLIAC Championship at Timbergate Golf Course, shooting an 8-over 296 in the third and final round to climb one spot in the standings to claim fifth at 34-over par (302-300-296—898). Mississippi University for Women took home the team title with an 853 (-11), becoming the first team in conference history to shoot under par in all three rounds of the championship.
Lake Forest college finished 14 strokes back in second place and one ahead of Lyon College with Illinois College taking fourth at 24-over (888).
Junior Pranav Nandakumar led the Prairie Fire on this day, carding a 1-under 71 with four birdies to his credit, including one on his very first hole — the 438-yard, par-4 ninth with the shotgun start. His other three birdies came in a four-hole stretch, helping him finish the tournament at 10-over par (226) in a tie for 24th.
Knox's top player over all three rounds was first-year Thomas Lyaudet, who tied for sixth in the 63-player field with a 1-under 215. The rookie added three birdies of his own today while carding a 1-over 73, giving him eight birdies over the 54 holes (as well as an eagle).
Both junior Gabriel Newman and first-year Diego Carrillo shot a 76 (+4) in the final round with the former making par on 11 holes with birdies on two others, and the latter providing 10 pars and three birdies. Newman tied for 28th overall at 13-over par while Carrillo tied for 36th with sophomore Nathaniel Zug — who had his best round of the tournament today with a 77 (+5) — at 18-over.
Matt Wilkinson of MUW birdied his last two holes to win medalist honors by one stroke (-6) over teammate Zach Riley and Tyler Wengronowitz of Lake Forest.
